City Council Candidates Forum on Arts + Culture
Saturday September 12 2-4PM
Space is limited, so please rsvp to chris@chocolatefactorytheater.org. Join us just before Primary Day for a special political forum on arts and culture. On September 12, 2009 at 2pm, artists, cultural organizations and the general public will have a chance to hear from the candidates in the race to fill the open seat of the 26th District of the City Council. The forum provides the candidates an opportunity to outline their plans for nurturing, sustaining and advancing the arts in Long Island City, the epicenter of the borough's creative community. The Chocolate Factory Theater will host Democratic candidates Deirdre Feerick, Brent O'Leary and Jimmy Van Bramer, and Republican candidate Angelo Maragos as they discuss cultural policy, funding for the arts and the critical real estate issues facing the neighborhood's artists and arts organizations. Additionally candidates will outline their role in identifying shared interests between arts-affiliated groups and the wider community. The Long Island City arts community will generate questions to be asked by moderator Allison Lichter, Culture Editor, WNYC/WNYC.org. The candidates' forum kicks off The Chocolate Factory's participation in place + displaced, a community-based cultural mapping project in Long Island City. Fractured Atlas, one of the leading arts services organizations in the city, will work with The Chocolate Factory and other local partners to identify and map artists, cultural organizations and creative industries to make visible the diversity and cultural vitality of Long Island City. The map will not only represent the present but will illustrate what has been lost from the past and what is at risk of being lost in the future.
