Team One by AUNTS is the documentation of a 30 person curatorial team choosing 3 artists for a show. Team One by AUNTS is the show of 3 artists chosen by a 30 person curatorial team. What is/are the role/s of the curator/s in the presentation of dance? Where is the current dance curator situated in today's dance domain? What is the relationship of the curator to the audience? Is it that of a mediator between the dance/r and audience? Between the art and the viewer? How in touch with current trends, how knowledgeable of historical lineage, and what kind of interest in the field of dance does a curator of dance need? How does/can the curator create/generate trends and reception of dance? Team One explicitly places the curatorial group on a crowded pedestal, above that of the comfortably numbered show it chooses to exhibit. Team One is concerned with the politics of curating dance - examining expectations, power relations, tastes and themes expressed in choosing people/groups/works to present. A one-time curatorial collective, Team One transforms curating into a generative experiment about social relations, distributing the curatorial activity over a large network of people with ample documentation of the process, thus breaking the domain of the curator as a single individual or small group making decisions behind closed doors. The curatorial activity, in the form of written, videotaped and photographed documentation of the process, is presented to the audience as an art installation in conjunction with the live, curated show. The live show produced by Team One may seem typical, but what is revealed and magnified is the difficult process of the attempt to be responsible for the presentation of work that has potential to be relevant.
